Mr. Lenwood Leroy Whitley, age 78 was the son of the late George and Nora Jane Whitley. Mr. Whitley transitioned from earth to heavenly reward on Friday October 2, 2015 at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, NY. “Len” graduated from the Johnston County School system and served briefly in the United States Navy.

Mr. Dewey Edward Wood, Sr. was born August 18, 1944 to Helen and Dewy Wood in Smithfield, NC. Mr. Wood entered into eternal rest Sunday Sept. 20, 2015 at his home in Middlesex, NC.
His family will continue his legacy of Love. Lillie Mae Henry Richardson was born July 16, 1945 to the late Walter Roosevelt Henry and Reverend Ada Williams Henry.
She received her education at Short Journey School in Johnston County, NC. She loved playing bingo, fishing, having lots of fun and laughter with her family. Lillie Mae loved to sing at all the Family Reunions she attended, even if she wasn't on the program. She never met a stranger, she loved everyone.
Lillie Mae Henry Richardson was preceded in death by her husband Garfield Richardson, five sisters; Hazel Robinson, Vernell Williams, Earlene Williams, Dorothy Sanders, Mattie Lee Henry, two grandchildren and a son-in-law Eddie Johnson. Those left to cherish her memories includes one daughter; Minister Cynthia Johnson of Smithfield, NC, three sons; Robin Henry of Selma, NC, Detroit Henry (Annette) of Dunn, NC, Cleveland Henry of Rahway, NJ, one sister; Mary Nwoke of Lawerenceville, GA, two brothers; Walter Fred Henry (Carolyn) of Selma, NC, Walter Henry Jr. of Smithfield, NC, seven step children, nineteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She departed this life at the age of 55 on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Carolyn is survived by her son, Anthony M. Smith and daughter Myeshia N. Mrs. Almeta Berry Baylor passed away peacefully Monday August 24, 2015 at her home. Mrs. Baylor was born July 16, 1938 in Smithfield, NC to the late George Robinson and Lillie B. Terrell.
Mrs. Baylor was preceded in death by both her parents George and Lillie, her husband of 49 years Mr. John Baylor and a son Darrell Baylor.

Mrs. Janice M. Jones-Richardson, age 67 passed quietly away early Friday morning at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC with family by her side. Janice Maurice Jones Richardson was born to Mr. Carlton R. Jones and Lillian Davis Jones in Greenville County VA.After Graduation from high school she received further education from Virginia Commonwealth and later earned a degree in nursing. Janice worked for 44 years in the nursing field where she pursued her purpose of aiding others.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents Carlton and Lillian Jones, one son Kevin N. Richardson, two brothers Vernon Jones Sr., Carlton Jones Jr, and one sister Barbara Jones. She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter; Kia V. Jones of Richmond VA, one son; James M. Richardson, Jr of Durham NC, two brothers; Levon Jones of Graham NC, Vernon Jones Jr of Raleigh NC, two sisters; Joyce Carter of Atlanta GA, Myra Jones-Abid of Lexington Park MD, four grandchildren; Jual, Jahkazia, Keison, Kym and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers and friends. Mrs. Earlene Holden Nixon, of Smithfield NC transitioned on Friday July 31 2015 at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
Earlene Holden Nixon was born May 10 in Longwoods, NC to the late Wille Holden and Easter Carmichael Holden. She was educated at Johnston County Training School and Payne's Business and Secretarial School in Raleigh. She also became a dedicated member of St. Peter Disciple of Christ Church where she served faithfully until her death.
Earlene was preceded in death by her husband Claude Nixon and son William "Billy" Bunch (Barbara). She leaves to cherish her loving memory; Donald Nixon (Velvet), Susan Parker Nixon (Douglas), Dwayne Nixon, Marvin Nixon and William Charles Nixon. Also, mourning her memory are seven grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends.

Mrs Louise Tempie Jane Bell, age 97 transitioned from labor to reward on July 28, 2015 while in the care of Cedar Bayou Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Baytown TX. Mrs. Bell was a longtime resident of Smithfield, NC and member of Galilee Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her parents John W Mitchener and Arrow Sanders Mitchener and reared by her stepmother Gussie Mayo Sanders Mitchener. She was the widow of the late Joesph W. Bell, and is survived by five children; Lynwood, Maurice, Donnell, Gwendolyn, Rita. Twins Carolyn and Evelyn deceased at an early age. Tempie also lost four brothers Napoleon, Wiley, Everett and Wilbert prior to her death she leaves to mourn her lost two brothers Raymond and Clifton and a sister Willena, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one grandchild who also predeceased her Jabari and a host of other surviving relatives and friends to cherish her memories.
Homegoing services for Mrs. Bell are scheduled for Saturday August 8th 2015. Viewing/Visitation will begin at 11:00am on Saturday with Eulogistic Services starting at 12:00 noon Galilee Baptist Church Smithfield, NC.

Mr. Bennie Vinson age 80 of Wilson's Mills NC deceased on Thursday July 23, 2015 at SECU Hospice House after a brief illness. Mr. Vinson was born to the late George and Mary Vinson April 2, 1935 in Johnston County NC. Mr. Bennie was educated in the Johnston County schools and later moved to New York to pursue other opportunities. Mr. Vinson was married to Bertha Mae Frasier for over 50 years and is survived by six children Charnita, Bennie Jr., Ronald, Debbie, Yvette, and Stacy; three sisters Yvonne, Evelyn,Johnetta and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services for Mr. Vinson will take place on Friday July 31st. Bishop Holder passed quietly away on Tuesday morning May 26th at the Transitions Hospice Center in Raleigh surrounded in love by his family. Bishop Holder was born Nov. 11, 1929 to Alfred and Louzine Holder in Johnston County, NC. He was married to Ruby Mae Stancil for over 60 years. Bishop Holder served his country in the US Air Force where he retired with the rank of Major. Major (Ret.) Holder also worked for and retired from National Institute of Health Services (NIHS). Major (Ret.) Holder also, served as the first black President of BB&T bank in the Smithfield-Selma area.
Bishop Holder leaves to cherish his memories; a son Sylvestor "Wayne" (Sharon) of Middlesex, NC, a daughter Wilma Jean (Michael) of Fayetteville, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Brown is an 1973 graduate of Smithfield-Selma Sr. High School and veteran of the United States Army.

Skeet had a baby sister Denise "Teenine" Williams who predeceased him in 1974. He was married to the former Nubiko (Toni) Williams for 27 years. He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Kristian Williams of Selma, NC. He is also survived by two sisters Sandra Williams of Smithfield, NC and Jewette Williams of Four Oaks, NC; a brother John McNeal (Mildred) of Fayetteville, NC; four nieces Sherrill Haley, Paula Waters, Dr. Katina Blue, and Whitney Knight; and one nephew Pastor Larry D. Williams, Jr; eight great nieces and nephews; one uncle Conwell "Johnny" Chance(Barbara); one aunt Irene Burgess and a host of cousins and friends.

Mrs. Helenease Mitchener West, age 85 of Smithfield, NC was born Oct 4, 1929 in Johnston County NC to the late Jesse and Lena Mitchener. Mrs. West transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday Feb. 5. 2014 at Wayne Memorial Hospital Goldsboro, NC. Mrs. Helenease was preceded in death by her siblings Thurman, Lewis, Charles, Booker, David Mitchener and Betty Mitchener King. She is survived by three brothers Jesse, Lt. Col. James Earl and Calvin Mitchener, three sisters Louise Curtis, Eula Adeniji and Laverne Hocutt, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives all of whom will treasure memories of her.
Funeral services and viewing will take place on Wed Feb. 11 at Galillee Baptist Church 2017 Galillee Rd Smithfield, NC beginning at 12:30pm with the homegoing services beginning promptly at 1:00pm.

Mrs. Mary E. Chandler, age 76 of Smithfield, NC was born Dec. 2, 1938 in Wilson's Mills, NC. She was born to the late Lee and Cora Sanders who preceded her in death. Mary departed this life on February 2, 2015. Mary leaves to cherish her memories four sisters, Elouise Raynor, Rosa Vinson, Senora Torain, and Rebecca Sanders, Three brothers, James Sanders, Bernard Sapp, and Cornell Sanders, one uncle Jacob Sanders, and one aunt Jean Alston and a host of nieces, nephews , other relatives and friends. Mary also had had two lifelong friends Deborah Sounds and Gloria Hopkins.

The homegoing ceremony honoring her life will be held Sun. February 8th at Interstate Ministries 4584 US Highway 70 Business West Clayton, NC beginning at 2:00pm. Charles Edward Cates, 89, of Hope Mills, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at home with family.
He was born June 10, 1925, to the late James and Leora Cates, in Parkton, NC.
Mr. Cates is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Josie Bacote Cates; five children, Thaddis (Stephanie), Val McLean (Jim), Milton (Pamela), Myra Shobande (Jide) and Susan Brandon (Michael); 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, 195 West David Parnell St. in Parkton, NC with services to follow at 1 p.m. and interment in Mount Hebrew Cemetery in Parkton, NC.

David Lee (Crockett) Searcy was born to the late Lena and George Searcy January 28, 1957 in Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Searcy died on December 2, 2014 after battling an illness.

LeRoy Meachem was born on January 2, 1923 to the late Louis Napoleon and Ellen Marshall Meachem of Wadesboro, NC. He was one of eleven children: Candy Blount, Sadie Meachem, Alice Meachem, and David Meachem all of whom preceded him in death. He entered into eternal rest on November 18, 2014 at the Durham VA hospital.

Alice Lois Christmas was born November 7, 1942 in Clayton, NC to Mr. James and Mrs. Corine Christmas. Ms. Christmas passed away quietly on Sunday August 17 at The Howard County General Hospital in Columbia Md.

Stencil (Doc) Chester Stokes Sr. was born in Valdosta Georgia to the late Rittie Stokes and John Stokes. Doc was one of six children Sam, (Taylor, Maddie, Gussie, and Celia who preceded him in death). Mr. Stokes transitioned on Sunday August 3rd at the Wake Med Center Raleigh, NC. Funeral Services for "Doc" will take place Saturday August 9th at St. Peters Church of Christ Disciple of Christ, 1011 Massey St. Smithfield, NC at 1:00pm.
Doc enjoyed riding horses and was a member of the "Federation of The Black Cowboys", later after moving to NC he became a member of the "Bounty Hunters Saddle Club" and "The Barnyard Bandits". He supported many fund raisers and The Cancer Foundation.
Doc leaves a great legacy behind, but leaves an even greater legacy in his children to carry on his memories; Betty Jean, Carmelita (Robert), Stencil Jr.(Kia), Pretice (Tamara), Sondra (Rashad), Shenica, Nicole, and Patrice . Fifteen Grandchildren, one Great grandson and a special friend Whitney Jones.
