Ms. James Alice Blue Hayswood was May 15, 1914, in Moore County, North Carolina. She departed this life on February 29, 2016 in Durham, NC.
She was the youngest daughter of the late James Alexander Chalmers Blue and Deanna Stewart Blue Hayswood. At the age of three, she became the stepdaughter of the late Charles Cook Hayswood, pastor of Pine Street Presbyterian Church. Alice became the first usher at the age of eight, and she joined the church at the age of 13.
Her early education was received at Whitted and Hillside High schools through ninth grade. Her junior and senior years were completed at Redstone Academy, later named J. H. Hayswood High School in Lumberton, NC. She graduated on May 18, 1933. In September, 1933, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. While there she joined the Siloam Presbyterian church and worked faithfully until her return to North Carolina in 1941, when she affiliated herself again with Pine Street Presbyterian Church, which was later renamed Covenant Presbyterian Church.
She served in many capacities within the church including secretary of the Sunday School, teacher of pre-school-age children, president and secretary-treasurer of the Annie Alston Circle, each for two years; member of the choir and secretary-treasurer of the Usher Board. She also was a member and vice chair of the Trustee Board, serving two, three-year terms, Altar Flower chairperson for over five years, health care technician, a member of Presbyterian Women, and vice moderator and chair of the Church Sister project. Alice also served as secretary of National Missions of Catawba Presbytery for four years.
She retired from John Umstead Hospital, Butner, NC, in 1976, after 13 years of service. She then became more active in the community attending Citizen’s Police Academy, and coordinating many activities for seniors at Forest Hill Heights Community Center. She spent her final years at Carver Living Center, in Durham.
She leaves to mourn her loss a number of God-children, two granddaughters Lora Jelise Henderson and Marlee Alyssa Henderson, the Covenant church family and a host of cousins and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. Hayswood will be held Fri. March 4, 2016 at Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA), 2620E. Weaver St., Durham NC 27707. Viewing/visitation begins at 11:00 am followed immediately at 12:00 noon for eulogistic services.
