Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. (Psalm 103.1)
Early morning on January 15, 2021, Dorothy Lewis answered the Master’s call and transitioned from time to eternity. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)
Dorothy was born on August 10, 1932 in Benson, North Carolina. She was the third child born to the late William and Lucille Ingram. She was educated in Johnston County school system. At an early age she married Milton Lewis and from that union they had five children. Dorothy was a stay at home mother. Dorothy was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandma.
Later in life she decided to pursue a job at Burlington Mills Industry in Smithfield, N.C. where she worked there for many years. As time moved on she traveled to Washington, D.C. and landed a job at Ida’s Department Store and was a clerk in the jewelry department. She bought more jewelry there than her customers. Dorothy decided to venture out to another job down the street to Posen’s Deli. She was the head cashier and she enjoyed counting the money and eating the kosher food. Dorothy worked there until retirement. The customers loved her and would stop by and stood in long lines just to chat with her.
In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Dorothy had a love for reading books and working puzzles. Dorothy was a gifted gardener. Her garden of plants were in her living room. In her earlier years she loved traveling to unknown places and fishing in the Shenandoah Lake. Dorothy favorite things were family, friends, and fun. She would always tell her family to give her flowers while she was alive.
Left to cherish fond memories of Dorothy are her daughters, Sherry Lewis McCoy and Sandra A .Lewis both of Beltsville, Maryland, three grandsons, Brian Lewis of Marietta, Georgia, Miah Lewis of Washington, D.C., Brannon McCoy of Beltsville, one granddaughter, Erica Lewis of Beltsville, Maryland, and two great grandsons,
Sadiq Corte, of Marietta, Georgia and Taquale Martin, of Washington, D.C., and host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death, by her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Ingram, her two sisters, Mrs. Julia Sanders and Anne Vinson, one brother, William Ingram, Jr., two daughters, Billie J. Lewis of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Brenda K. Lewis of Laurel, Maryland, and son, Joe M. Lewis of Beltsville, Maryland.
